The Beginning

The Story Of How It Started

Vuyisa Potina, is a talented ceramist hailing from Elliotdale , now based in Franschhoek. As a young boy, he discovered his passion for ceramics while tending to cattle, shaping small clay models of oxen. Guided by influential mentors like Rodney George and Ralph Johnson, Vuyisa's artistic abilities flourished, leading him to win accolades such as the Best on Show Award - New Signature at the 2006 Ceramics SA Cape Regional Exhibition.

Starting as a young boy in the rural South Africa, Vuyisa's passion for ceramics has grown into a thriving business. The craftsmanship of local artisans from Franschhoek community, further promised more artistic standards of excellence to be expected.

Bolstered by the support of CCDI export training, Vuyisa ventured further into international markets, particularly the United States. His ceramics gained recognition at prestigious trade shows and exhibitions, opening doors to new opportunities and solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the world of ceramics.

In 2022, at the Decorex in Cape Town, Vuyisa Potina showcased his innovative smoke-fired pottery. At this event, comments from attendees where “His classic round designs, crafted from white porcelain clay inspired by bone and wood, exemplify his artistic capabilities and dedication to pushing boundaries in design and technique.”

From this point , starting as a young boy in the rural South Africa, Vuyisa's passion for ceramics has grown into a thriving business. The craftsmanship of local artisans from Franschhoek community, led by Mrs Douglas at Coco Africa, and the exceptional solid wood furniture and cabinetry by Mr Douglas, further enhance the artistic collaboration and standards of excellence to be expected.

About our Products

Vuyisa Potina’s work is a delicate mixture of traditional and modern. The smoke firing methods are a nod to his Xhosa heritage Traditional smoke-fired process can produce uneven glazing which is an integral part of this type of handmade ceramic.

When talking with Vuyisa Potina and asked about his approach to ceramics, he has said, “To work with our hands is part of our culture”. He blends the traditional smoke-firing techniques of his culture with a contemporary approach to form and function.

Vuyisa Potina further adds that he prefers "to let the natural colors and textures of the clay come to the fore, ensuring that my work remains original, exciting and sought after. I get inspired by nature and I love ethnic color. My products are influenced by my Xhosa background."
